I took the above pictures for my finalized photo essay. I was really happy with the finished product and I could actually see myself using this as a desk lamp!

A Work in Progress
The pictures above were taken of my lamp in progress. This mess is what happens when I work on my project. You always need a lot of space and many materials!
Most people put clothes in their Urban Outfitters bag, not me. All of my art homework goes in the bag instead.

generating ideas.
During class last Thursday, we posted up what we had done for homework on the walls so that we could go once again, from class to class and observe other's art work. We discussed how we could generate ideas from others and then proceeded to critique others to help them come up with ideas as well. The top picture is just a section of the wall behind where I was sitting. The pictures that follow it is the homework that I had done.

Creating the lamp shade.
Over the Thanksgiving break we were to create different textures using combinations of our past homework. Today during class we posted them up on the wall and then walked around through the different classrooms to observe what others had done. We then went back to our original class and took sticky notes and voted for the ones that we thought were the most strong so that the creator could narrow down their ideas. The pictures above show the ideas on the wall and students voting for the ones they liked most.

show and tell time!
These are just a few team photos that I took while we were setting up our letters, waiting for class to start, and switching shifts of staying with our word. We were very pleased with how the project turned out and I think I can speak for the group when I say that we are proud of our work.
These photos are of different groups and their projects. Everyone worked very hard on their projects and I think that you could definitely tell when you walked around campus and observed other groups.
what language looks like.. in nature.
Our group tried to find an area around Potters Lake that would portray our word best. We tired a bunch of different areas and also played with the lighting. We thought that the lighting would help the viewer get a better understanding of the image and the meaning that we were trying to portray as a group. We found some things more successful than others and it helped us when determining where to place our word for the final walk through tour.

constructing the letters.
Today in class we had a demonstration on how to construct a book to complete our color projects. Afterwards we had some more in class work time and my group spent this time getting as much as possible done. The picture above are my "groupies" working hard!

step one: creating the model.
Today during class we did critiques of our color/words project. After that we started working on creating our word out of foam core. It took us a while, but we ended up with seven 12 inch letters! Next step, figure out the setting..

Happenings in class.
Today during class we put our homework up on the wall and did critiques. Mark and I were super tired today and needed coffee to wake ourselves up. This is what happens when we drink coffee that early in the morning.

turn in project day!
Today during class we turned in our projects and then displayed them onto the wall. I think that the project turned out really well. You could tell that everyone worked really hard and the finished product was something that everyone was proud to show off.
After we discussed the projects we took down our posters and put up what we did for homework. Our homework was to take words and then make 20 different sketches out of them expressing the word that we chose. Putting them on the wall was interesting because everyone had very different ideas and it was cool to see what everyone had come up with.

looking at sketches in class.
Today during class we had to put a lot of our drawings on the wall. After we did that we went around and put check marks next to the drawings of others that we liked the most out of the different categories. This activity was a good way to get ideas from others and to branch out on your own ideas.

Homework for Sept. 2 continued.
Interviews about design:
INTERVIEW ONE.
-Ben Atkinson
INTERVIEW ONE.
-Ben Atkinson
Me
okay so lets see..
its hard to explain
but my project is about how i can redesign a pack of cigarettes
i said that it was bad design because packs of cigarettes get crushed really easily
hahaha...hmm but if the packets where anything else it would be too expensive
Me
what if they were plastic!!
they could be recycleable
yeah but i feel like that would put more toxins in the smoke. what they use already is probably the best design cause its cheap and not hard to make. a plastic cause would be a pain in the ass. trust me i now work at interworld plastic and if we had to put to gether plastic packs that would be a pain
Me
haha so what
people who buy the object dont care much as to how it came around
what if people just bought a metal containter and then when they went to the store they just refilled the metal container
i guess idk scew smoking im trying to quit
they have metal containers. people are just to lazy to use them
Me
haha yeah i guess that is true
yeahhhhhh
INTERVIEW TWO.
-Zack Simmerman
Me
but if you could think of a few things that could better your pack what would be your top 3
hmm thats actually harder than it seems
Me
haha okay how about this
like when you sit down? your cigarettes always get crushed or something
or if you could have them delivered in like singles
or if they could just be cheaper in general haha
Me
ha well why do you buy cigarettes?
i dont thats the thing im being hypothetical
Me
haha i see
well im trying to think
lol
Me
you have no suggestions on how cigarettes could be designed easier do you
um a metal case instead of paper
Me
what if you could take them to the store and they could just refill your metal container
thats a good one
more cigarettes in a pack
Me
would you want more in a pack or would you rather have one that holds less so you dont smoke so much
more in a pack because that never works people always go back for more anyways
Me
yeah i guess thats true.
well thank you zack!
is that good enough?
Me
yesss sir!
thank you
INTERVIEW THREE.
-Joey Rosen
Me
okay well my project is about how i think that cigarettes could be better designed
like they could come in cardboard packs because they get crushed too easily
or they could be put in metal containers and refilled instead of continuing to buy cigarettes
do you have any ideas?
haha let me thinkk
so ur project is basically comin up for a new design for cigs
Me
well for the pack that they come in
ok ok
yea somethin like the pack they come in bein made out of a differnent material
bc they really do get crushed to easily
Me
well what could they be made out of?
mayb somethin like aluminum
nothin too hard
but nothin too soft
Me
how many would you want to be able to fit?
like 20 mayb lower the amount of cigs in the pack to cut the cost too
Me
would you want them to be recycleable or refilable
refilable would b better
but then wouldnt they have to sell the cigs individually
Me
well you could get an aluminum container and then just go to the gas station and refill them
INTERVIEW FOUR.
-Laura Williamson
Me
my project is about how i have to take something and redesign it
so i picked a pack of cigarettes because i think that its really easy to crush your cigarettes
there are other things you could do
like make the pack metal and then just take it to the gas station and refil it
do you have any other ideas on what could be a better design?
you could make them invisible ciggarettes
that'd be easy!
Me
haha that would not be easy
they wouldn't be there. so you'd have to do nothing. haha.
Me
haha thank you laura
but reallyy......
i have no idea
Me
okay well thanks anyway
alright. you're welcome.
INTERVIEW FIVE.
-Donnie Breish
just bare with me here
my project is about how i have to pick something that i think could be better designed
ok
Me
i picked a pack of cigarettes because i think that there are tons of different ways that a pack could be designed better
make up answers for me
go i give you permissione
Me
for example making it out of cardboard so that it doesnt crush
make me sound so crazy
STEEL CIG PACKS
Me
haha no i need to know if you have any ideas
STEEL TOE CIGS
Me
steel?
why steel?
crushproof
Me
haha so they pack better?
no
prepacked steel cigs
which you just buy refills for at the store
Me
that would be tight
they fill it up for you for halfprice
for not charging them for packaging
the foil and plastic and shit
Me
that would be nice
oh hellzyeah
